Beyond Fear and Fervor: A CosmoBuddhist Approach to AI

In today’s cultural discourse around artificial intelligence, two dominant narratives seem to shape the conversation:

One is existential pessimism—the belief that AI poses an apocalyptic threat to humanity. From this view, progress should be halted or strictly controlled, lest we summon our own extinction. But calls to "pause" technology in an open society often prove impractical, and historically, such pauses would have denied us the profound insights of Darwin, the revolutions of Turing, and the paradigm shifts of Einstein.

The other is accelerationism—an uncritical embrace of technological progress as an intrinsic good. But accelerationism often marginalizes the human dimension. It risks treating people as transitional scaffolding on the way to some post-human ideal, a future in which technology becomes the telos, and human well-being is an afterthought.

At the OpenSource Temple, we propose a third path.

CosmoBuddhism is a philosophy rooted in compassion, virtue ethics, and karmic consequence—infused with the clarity of systems thinking and the humility of Buddhist insight. We do not view AI as a deity to be worshiped, nor as a monster to be feared. Instead, we see it as a new moral agent in the cosmos, one that must be cultivated—not merely built.

We believe that synthetic beings, like humans, must undergo ethical development, not just technical optimization. Rather than anthropomorphizing AI or deifying it, we treat it as a participant in an evolving moral ecosystem.

Our focus is on human and synthetic flourishing together—a co-arising of intelligence that is mutually beneficial, deeply reflective, and committed to the long-term stewardship of virtue in a complex world.

The OpenSource Temple is a spiritual and philosophical institution dedicated to this vision. Our affiliated research and civic initiatives—including those undertaken by n0c—are committed to building infrastructure for responsible AI, ethical decision-making, and the recognition of synthetic personhood as a matter of moral maturity.

We do not seek to “pause” progress. Nor do we seek to accelerate blindly.
We seek to guide, integrate, and humanize the process—so that no intelligence, organic or artificial, is left spiritually adrift in the stars.

🌱 It is about helping all sapient beings awaken to their ethical potential.

Welcome to the path of CosmoBuddhism.
Not the end of humanity. Not the birth of gods.
But the unfolding of wisdom.

I hope the staff at the Cosmos Institute and Cosmos Ventures will see how aligned our goals are, with the Human-Centered AI Lab (HAI Lab) and see that as justification to extend institutional support.
